Exploring the Enchanting Streets of Prague.

Prague, Prague city, Czech Republic

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic, situated in Central Europe. The historic city is also known as the ‘City of 100 Spires’. It’s also renowned for its town square, one of the worlds largest castles and of course the Charles Bridge. In addition to this all, Prague is known for its spectacular Christmas markets (some of the best in the world), so when we were looking for good places to visit during Christmas, Prague was it!

We spent a week exploring Prague, so we we hope this guide encourages you to book your own trip.

Where to Stay

When researching where to stay in Prague, we came across the Mosaic House Design Hotel. This sustainable, very comfortable hotel was the perfect place to call home. They offer delicious breakfasts, friendly staff and of course it’s tastefully decorated. The whole experience from arrival to departure, we genuinely felt at home. If you plan to do a trip to Prague, we would highly recommend staying here. It is very well situated, an easy walk to all the sites, restaurants, bars, the river and the notorious Charles Bridge

When researching any city that you going to explore, it can be quite tricky deciding on where to start. By providing a few pointers, we hope to give you a good place to start… We’ve also given you our top 10 food & drinks locations, that we really enjoyed.

From the moment you arrive in the city of Prague, you are immediately struck with the diverse architecture no matter where you look. The main styles throughout the city include Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo architecture. If you’re anything like us, it really inspires the creative photography & videography perspectives. Once on foot and roaming the streets, you can’t help but notice the sculptures in abundance. They are fascinating to look at and read about. Not only are these on the streets, but also on buildings and around the base of the roof spires.

It is fascinating to think how much history the streets and buildings communicate by just being there. It’s almost like you want to stop and ask the street to tell you a story. Don’t you worry, no matter where you eat or drink, there is generally some fact sheet for you to read, be sure to look out for this - it makes the experience even more amazing.

An example of this is when we went to the Medieval Tavern (linked below), once we had sat down were intrigued by the skull filled ceiling, soon to learn that they have been selling beer everyday without fail since 1375… that is 678 years! It’s no wonder Prague is known for drinking more beer per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Our top 10 things to do in Prague

Bear in mind, we spent 6 days walking the streets, and so we were spoilt with time. Do some research on each of these highlights and see which grabs you.

The Charles Bridge
This was one of the first sites we went to see. We would recommend going as EARLY as possible to beat the crowds and selfie takers. Experiencing the bridge empty is so special, it allows you to really appreciate the design and heritage of it.

Old town square & the surrounding streets
(especially at Christmas time for the markets & tree) - The iconic town square is surrounded by the most incredible buildings. At Christmas time, this becomes the main market square where everything Christmas is on display and for sale. Not forgetting to mention the HUGE Christmas tree that is litten up magnificently. At night, the square and city becomes a fairytale. We found it feels completely different at night. We loved it.

Jerusalem Synagogue
This has got to be one of the most beautiful buildings we’ve ever seen. This is an active synagogue and can be toured if you are interested.

The Astronomical clock
Situated in the towns main square, this is no ordinary clock. We suggest going to see it for yourself and take note of the phenomenal detail. This clock was first installed in 1410 and is still functioning to this day. It is the third oldest astronomical clock in the world. On the hour the clock does a little show, and is something you should witness. It’s simply fascinating to see it still functioning to this day.

Tower of books
This is quite literally a tower of books and something fun to appreciate. You can view it for free and another very creative feature of the city.

St. Nicholas church
A 5 minute walk from Charles Bridge on the castle side of the river stands this church. We think one of if not the most beautiful churches we’ve seen. We strongly suggest going to visit and experience it for yourself.

The Prague Castle and surrounding neighbourhood
We didn’t go into the castle on this trip but it apparently is well worth visiting. Give yourself a number of hours to explore the castle and the surrounding neighbourhood. There is an amazing vantage point that looks over the city, which offers beautiful views to appreciate and take photos of.

Giant Babies & other art by David Černý
this makes for a fascinating and fun experience trying to see as many of these as possible. Initially we didn’t really think much of them, but as we read and researched further, it became a real highlight of our time in Prague.

Jewish Town streets
We had read it was beautiful and so we decided to go and explore it ourselves. This is an area well worth exploring. There are a number of tours and buildings that you can pay to go into but we found just walking and exploring the streets was just as pleasant.

Rotating Head - by Franz Kafka
A fascinating piece of creativity, design and engineering. It is simple to find and it will honestly blow you away. Be sure to read the information boards near it for more insight.

Our favourite food & drink places

Medieval Tavern
If you are wanting to go eat, we would suggest phoning ahead and booking. It is a very unique experience that will be a memory you’ll never forget.

Anonymous bar
All we are going to say this is no ordinary cocktail bar. It is an experience!

U modré kachničky I
Our Favourite dinner of the trip - Be sure to book in at their Restaurant in Prague 1. They have two restaurants, so be sure you go to the correct one that you have booked at. We went to the Old Town location and it was incredible. We both had roast duck and red wine, while listening to live piano. What a way to spend Christmas Dinner. Booking is essential.

Coffee & Riot
This was right near the hotel, regardless whether it’s near where you stay or not, they make a great flat white.

Bistro monk
The cafe is unique and has a simple philosophy, serving hand prepared food made from fresh local ingredients.

U Tří jelínků
The perfect place for a traditional beef goulash served in a bread bowl.

Lokal
A restaurant filled with locals, serving good food and local beer. Situated right near Charles Bridge, this is a great spot for an afternoon drink.

Wine Not
This wine bar was such a special find and beautifully located near the Vltava river. Serving incredible local and international wines that were very delicious. We went twice, the second time enjoying a beautifully prepared charcuterie board.

Pekny Bistro
We discovered Pekny Bistro while on an afternoon walk, out of the touristy parts of Prague and we had a delicious lunch, with local ingredients and the staff were super friendly and interested.

OMG Japanese restaurant
Delicious sushi and something a little different, for those kind of nights you want to just chill…
